AHS misleading public on nurses work hours

Tuesday’s letters: AHS ads for nurses are puzzling

Edmonton Journal October 21, 2013

Alberta Health Services’ ads seem to blame nurses for not working full time, yet full-time jobs are not what AHS is offering, says reader S.M. Hogan.

As a front-line nurse, I find it curious Alberta Health Services (AHS) has bought newspaper ads seeking more full-time nurses.

The ad says only 31 per cent of nurses work full time in Alberta. Since the drastic health-care cuts of the mid-1990s, full-time nursing jobs have been like gold dust.

Of the 300 advertised positions on the AHS website, only 67 or 22 per cent are permanent full-time positions. The rest are temporary, casual or part time.

At whom are these costly ads directed? They seem to blame nurses for not working full time, yet full-time jobs are not what AHS is offering, and currently employed nurses who ask to increase their hours permanently are turned down.

I hope AHS will consult with current nurses who want full-time hours and will create permanent full-time jobs for new recruits.
