Essential service Law will stress co-operation and bargaining

New labour relations legislation in Alberta will place the responsibility of determining just which workers are deemed “essential” at the bargaining table, Labour Minister Christina Gray says.

The legislation itself won’t determine which public sector workers are considered essential under the law in the case of a strike or job action. Instead, the bill will create a framework that allows the parties at the bargaining table to decide which workers provide an essential service, Gray said in a recent interview.
